South Shore, KY

South Shore sits on the Kentucky bank of the Ohio River across from Portsmouth, Ohio, where Tygarts Creek meets the river. The home-rule city grew after the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway arrived, and the river, rail line, and U.S. 23 still define how it connects to Greenup, Ashland, and the Huntington-Ashland metro. The 2020 census counted 1,066 residents. The South Portsmouth–South Shore station gives the town an Amtrak stop for the Cardinal, with trains linking the river valley to the wider rail map.

Rotary Park is where the calendar gets social, including the annual quilt festival and other city events. McKell Elementary and McKell Middle sit outside the city limits but serve local children through Greenup County Schools. South Shore’s economic story is unusually specific: Graf Brothers processes Appalachian white oak into rift- and quarter-sawn lumber, flooring, and barrel staves, with two sawmills and a large single-site stave operation. River traffic, school buses, lumber trucks, and train days give the city a working rhythm that is easy to picture.
