South Vinemont, AL

South Vinemont sits four miles north of Cullman in northern Cullman County, near a line of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and at one of Alabama’s higher points, roughly 1,100 feet above sea level. The area began as Pinnacle; settlers arrived in 1871, a post office opened in 1887, and grape-growing led to the Vinemont name in 1898. In 1961 the town incorporated as Vinemont before adding South after state officials said that name was already taken. The census began using South Vinemont in 1980.

School and town facilities give the place its present-day shape. Vinemont High School serves grades 9 through 12 within the Cullman County system, and the town maintains a community center and the Vinemont Sports Complex. Nearby Cullman supplies the county-seat connection, while South Vinemont retains its own municipal name, school, and recreation facilities. A newcomer can understand the town through that north-of-Cullman position and the layers of names left by the railroad, early grape growers, and the later incorporation.
