South Waverly, PA

South Waverly is a Bradford County borough on the New York line, the northernmost Pennsylvania municipality in the Penn-York Valley. The Chemung River forms its western edge, and I-86 and U.S. 220 carry the through traffic. South Waverly was established from Athens Township in 1878, but its roots cross the state line: it began as part of Waverly, New York, built out on the Pennsylvania side. The settlement grew around Factoryville, a name tied to the mills that once spread through the valley.

That older industrial map is still part of the local story. South Waverly sits beside Sayre, across from Waverly, and near Athens, making the four communities feel like one place when you are following the roads and river. The Chemung joins the Susquehanna a few miles south, so the borough is part of a larger water corridor as well as a state-line community. South Waverly is a small borough with a council of its own, but the daily geography is regional: schools, work, shopping, rail history, and river crossings do not stop at the border.
