South Webster, OH

South Webster is a Scioto County village of 670 people in the 2020 census, stretched along State Route 140 in the county's northeast corner. John Bennett platted the town in 1853, and the name honors Daniel Webster. The settlement grew from two earlier places in Bloom Township: Bloomfield, laid out in 1837, and Webster. They were incorporated together as South Webster in 1887, while the area's post office kept the older name Iron Furnace until 1888.

Education is a big part of the village map. Bloom-Vernon Local School District includes Bloom-Vernon Elementary and South Webster Junior-Senior High School, and the school teams are known locally as the Jeeps. The Portsmouth Public Library also maintains a South Webster branch. The village's history includes Scioto County soldiers who joined the 56th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War, but the everyday setting is more immediate: Route 140, the school campus, the library, and the small streets that link the old Bloomfield and Webster sites.
