Southfield is one of metro Detroit's most established suburbs, easily recognized by its golden office towers and quiet midcentury ranch neighborhoods. The city boomed in the late 1950s and 60s as families and corporate headquarters moved north from Detroit, attracting prominent modernist architects like Minoru Yamasaki to design standout buildings across the area. Today, Southfield serves as a busy regional crossroads where the Lodge Freeway (M-10) and I-696 meet. Southfield spreads its daily activity across several distinct hubs. The City Centre district along Evergreen Road brings together the civic campus, corporate office plazas, hotels, and Lawrence Technological University, which draws thousands of students studying architecture, engineering, and design. Over on the south side, the historic Northland Center property is in the middle of a massive redevelopment, transforming the old shopping mall site into new apartments, green spaces, and retail shops around the restored Hudson's building. Between the university, corporate offices, and a major healthcare sector anchored by Ascension Providence Hospital, the city welcomes a huge daytime workforce every weekday.

Away from the commercial corridors, Southfield offers plenty of peaceful green spaces and neighborhood recreation. The city maintains dozens of parks, including favorites like Carpenter Lake Nature Preserve and Valley Woods, where boardwalks and nature trails wind along the Rouge River. The Municipal Campus on Evergreen Road serves as the central gathering place, home to an expansive public library, sports facilities, an ice arena, and a spacious civic lawn. During the warmer months, residents come together on the lawn for food trucks, farmers markets, outdoor concerts, and the annual Kimmie Horne Jazz Festival.

Getting around Southeast Michigan from Southfield is hard to beat by car. Having quick on-ramps to I-696, the Lodge Freeway, and Telegraph Road makes for easy drives to downtown Detroit, Royal Oak, Birmingham, and the airport. On the flip side, large intersections and wide multi-lane boulevards mean daily errands usually require driving. The 7.75-mile City Centre Trail and local SMART bus lines provide good connections around the university and civic center, but walkability drops off quickly in purely residential areas.
