About Southmayd
Southmayd is a Grayson County city on State Highway 56, about seven miles west of Sherman. The community grew where the Texas and Pacific Railway crossed land granted to D. S. Southmayd, whose name it took. A general merchandise store and post office appeared by 1881, and the rail line drew settlers to the new stop. The city now sits in the Sherman-Denison area, but the old explanation still works: Southmayd began as a name on a railroad map and grew into a city around it.
