About Southmont
Southmont is a Cambria County borough on the heights above Johnstown and the Stonycreek River valley. Incorporated from Upper Yoder Township in 1919, it grew from farms into a residential borough on Johnstown's southern edge. The geography does most of the orientation: Johnstown lies to the east, Westmont to the north, and the Stonycreek runs through the valley below. The borough's current municipal rhythm is practical—council meetings, sewer and street work, recycling, and volunteer fire service—while Johnstown supplies the larger urban frame. The local shorthand is hillside borough, Johnstown edge, and Stonycreek below.
