About Southport

Southport is a small excluded city inside Indianapolis’ Perry Township, eight miles south of downtown. It was established in 1832, incorporated in 1853, and chose to remain an excluded city when Indianapolis and Marion County consolidated governments in 1969. That legal arrangement is the useful local detail: Southport keeps its own mayor, clerk-treasurer, police, parks board, and council while sitting inside the larger Indianapolis map. Little Buck Creek passes through the north side on its way to the White River, and Southport Elementary is within the city.

Southport Park sits just south of Little Buck Creek on Derbyshire Road. The 3.75-acre park has a community room, shelter, playground, basketball court, and baseball-softball diamond, and the city’s 2025 event list included an Easter egg hunt, Independence Day celebration, movies, music, a car show, and holiday events. The old downtown and Southport Farmers Market add another local meeting point, with Indianapolis eight miles north on the wider local map. Southport is a municipal pocket on the southern edge of a much larger city.
