About Southwest Harbor
Southwest Harbor is the main village within the town of the same name on Mount Desert Island, centered on the tidal cove of Southwest Harbor and extending north to Norwood Cove. The CDP covers the built-up harbor village, while the larger municipality includes other settlements and rural roads across the island. The harbor remains a working place: Beal's Lobster Pier operates alongside commercial fishing boats, and Southwest Boat Marine Services handles boatyard work, barge service, storage, dockage, metal fabrication, and underwater inspections.
The local map is civic and regional. Pemetic Elementary School sits on Main Street and serves the town's K-8 students. Route 102 and Route 102A carry traffic across the island, and current MaineDOT work plans include wharf and pier work at S. Harper, pier rehabilitation on Shore Road, and paving on the two state routes in 2026-27. Southwest Harbor is a harbor village where school, municipal services, marine trades, and lobster landings sit within the same island road network.
