Sparta, GA

Sparta is the Hancock County seat, a Georgia city of 1,357 residents in the 2020 census, founded in 1795 as the new county took shape. It became the county seat in 1797, was incorporated as a town in 1805, and became a city in 1893. The courthouse, built around 1882 and listed on the National Register, stands on Broad Street, with county offices close by; the LaFayette Hotel, Glen Mary Plantation, and Shoulderbone Plantation add older layers to the surrounding streets.

Sparta's school map runs from Lewis Elementary through Hancock Central Middle and High schools; John Hancock Academy is another local educational institution. Hancock State Prison, constructed in 1990 and opened in 1991, is also a major presence on Prison Boulevard. The Sparta-Hancock Historical Society keeps the county's school and architectural history close at hand. Sparta is a small central Georgia county seat where government, education, prison work, and a deep Black and white cultural history meet in one old town.
