About Spartanburg

Spartanburg is a census-designated place in Greensfork Township, Randolph County, Indiana. The community began as Newberg in 1832, and an 1842 post office established the Spartanburg name; the office remained open until 1907. Randolph County's Quaker settlement history includes Union Literary Institute, founded in 1846 by a biracial board. The school offered higher education to students of all races and sexes, and students worked four hours daily for room and board. Spartanburg's local record sits within that documented history of mail service, education, and abolitionism.
