About Spencer

Spencer is the Van Buren County seat on the western edge of the Cumberland Plateau, just above the Caney Fork valley. The town was established in 1850 and incorporated in 1909, then became known for Burritt College, which operated here from 1848 to 1939. Fall Creek Falls State Park spreads through the surrounding plateau and gorge country, putting the town on the edge of one of Tennessee’s best-known landscapes. Spencer is Upper Cumberland Tennessee in a courthouse-and-waterfalls arrangement, with college history under the park’s shadow.
