About Spencer

Spencer was founded in 1874 at a branch of the Wisconsin Central Railway, between two marshes in Marathon County. The village carried two earlier names—Waltham and Irene—before Spencer became the one that stuck. That railroad beginning still shows in the road map: Wisconsin 13 and 98 meet here, with several county highways ending in town. Spencer also formed a library in 1875, later becoming a branch of the Marathon County Public Library system. The local shorthand is marsh country, rail junction, and a village that changed names before settling into its present one.
