Spiceland, IN

Spiceland is a Henry County town in east-central Indiana, with 958 residents in the 2020 census. It was platted in 1850, and the name refers to spice bushes that grew near the original town site. The town lies in Spiceland Township along the local road network south of New Castle, with a history shaped by farms, churches, Quaker life, and small-town commerce. Its name is unusual, but the settlement's plan is familiar: a compact center surrounded by the township that shares its name.

The Spiceland Town-Township Public Library has served the community since becoming a public library in 1870, with a long interruption between 1890 and 1921. Since 1972 it has occupied the former Citizens State Bank on West Main Street. Spiceland's residents attend schools in the South Henry School Corporation, and the town continues to pair a 19th-century name with institutions that keep its main street in use.
