About Spiro

Spiro is a Le Flore County town that grew as a railroad station in the 1890s, but the name now points most strongly to Spiro Mounds, seven miles away on a bend of the Arkansas River. The 150-acre archaeological center preserves the remains of a major Mississippian cultural and religious center active roughly from 900 to 1450. Spiro is eastern Oklahoma with two timelines sitting side by side: a railroad town on the surface and one of North America’s most important ancient sites just beyond it.
