Spokane Valley, WA

Spokane Valley is a relatively young city just east of Spokane, officially incorporated in 2003 by combining several long-established communities like Opportunity, Greenacres, and Dishman. Long before it became a unified city, the area was known for its vast apple orchards, early pioneer trails, and railroad lines. Today, you can explore that heritage at the Spokane Valley Heritage Museum, housed in the historic Opportunity Township Hall. Modern Spokane Valley is built around everyday convenience, with Interstate 90 and Sprague Avenue serving as the main arteries connecting residential neighborhoods with shopping centers, medical facilities, and a steady mix of local jobs in healthcare, retail, and manufacturing.

Rather than having one single downtown core, the city spreads out across several lively commercial districts, quiet subdivisions, and major employment hubs like the Spokane Business and Industrial Park. Neighborhoods offer a mix of mid-century ranch homes on spacious lots, brand-new housing developments, and modern apartment communities. Outdoor paths are easy to reach from almost anywhere in town. The Appleway Trail stretches nearly six miles along a former railroad corridor, offering a smooth, paved route where residents can walk dogs, jog, or ride bikes toward nearby Liberty Lake.

Outdoor recreation is a major draw here, especially along the Spokane River on the northern edge of town. Around seven miles of the scenic, paved Centennial Trail wind along the riverbank, connecting cyclists and runners all the way into downtown Spokane or east across the state line into Idaho. Commuting is straightforward whether you drive or ride the bus, with regional transit hubs linking the valley directly to downtown Spokane and Spokane International Airport. Residents also enjoy clean, abundant drinking water drawn straight from the protected Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer beneath the valley floor.

Mirabeau Point Park serves as the city's favorite gathering hub, featuring peaceful walking paths, a natural waterfall spring, and the fully accessible Discovery Playground next to CenterPlace Regional Event Center and the local YMCA. Community events bring neighbors together throughout the year, highlighted by Valleyfest each September with hot air balloon launches, a parade, and live entertainment. Fall also brings the beloved Spokane County Interstate Fair for ten days of food, concerts, and farm exhibits, while nearby Avista Stadium offers classic summer evenings cheering on the Spokane Indians minor league baseball team.
