Spring Hill, PA

Spring Hill is a Cambria County census-designated place in Portage Township, directly south of Portage borough. The 2010 census counted 839 residents, down from 970 in 2000. The community sits in the Allegheny foothill landscape southeast of Ebensburg, near the divide between the Little Conemaugh watershed and the mountain roads leading toward Altoona and Johnstown. Portage Area School District serves local students.

Spring Hill's setting is inseparable from the region's coal and transportation history. Portage Township grew around railroad, mining, and river corridors, and the surrounding hills still organize how communities connect. The borough of Portage handles the nearest traditional center, while Spring Hill remains an unincorporated settlement identified through roads, homes, school routes, and township services. Wind turbines on the Allegheny Ridge and the old stone-arch bridge in Portage Township show two different eras of infrastructure in the same landscape: one tied to extracting and moving coal, the other to newer energy and regional connections.
