Spring Hill, TN

Spring Hill spans Maury and Williamson counties about 35 miles south of Nashville, and its scale changed sharply within a decade. The census count rose from 29,036 in 2010 to 50,005 in 2020. Manufacturing is central to that transformation. General Motors' Spring Hill complex occupies 2,100 acres at Saturn Parkway and, in 2026, assembles internal-combustion and electric vehicles on the same line. Stamping, propulsion, and battery operations share the campus with 700 acres of farmland and 100 acres of wildlife habitat. In June 2026, GM announced $275 million for a future Cadillac product and continued 2.7-liter engine production at Spring Hill. GM also plans to begin Blazer production there in 2027. Vehicle assembly, engine work, fields, and habitat now occupy one industrial property nearly four decades after Saturn shifted the local economy toward automotive manufacturing.

National history occupies several sites around the older part of town. On November 29, 1864, Union troops at Spring Hill repulsed separate Confederate attacks and passed through overnight toward Franklin, where another major battle followed. Rippa Villa, built in 1855, served as a headquarters for officers from both armies. The city accepted the house and its 98.4-acre property as a donation in 2017. Current Battle of Franklin Trust tours cover the house, battlefield, slavery, and enslaved labor across the property, placing military decisions beside the lives and work that sustained the estate. A separate downtown walking tour includes churches, a cemetery, the McKissack home, and the site of a Freedmen's Bureau school.

The public library carries that Freedmen School history into Spring Hill's present. It opened in 1975 inside the former school on McLemore Street, a building erected just after the Civil War for formerly enslaved residents and later used as an all-Black school until about 1965. The grand opening drew about 200 visitors from a town of roughly 1,000, and most applied for cards; the first collection held about 2,500 books. After several moves, the library opened at 144 Kedron Parkway in 2002 inside a former Saturn daycare building. Its current services include a staff-built map of nonprofits and social services in both counties. As of 2026, a replacement library remained at the conceptual-design stage, so the Kedron Parkway building was still operating.

Fischer Park and Evans Park put city recreation on Port Royal Road and Maury Hill Street. City-operated parks are open from daylight to dark unless a site posts different hours. Fischer Park has a half-mile path, splash pad, courts, and football fields; Hill Fest used the grounds for performances and activities on June 6, 2026. Evans Park combines baseball fields with a dog park and a memorial butterfly garden. These sites supply routine play and gathering space alongside the historic properties and manufacturing campus. At 144 Kedron Parkway, library patrons enter a building designed for Saturn workers' children, borrow materials, find local services, and encounter a piece of the automotive era repurposed for present-day Spring Hill.
