Spring Lake, FL

Spring Lake is a Hernando County CDP in the Brooksville area, an old rural community whose name is easy to confuse with newer Florida developments. The community was already on local maps in the 1840s; the Spring Lake Methodist Church dates to 1884, and an early school first met in the church before a dedicated schoolhouse went up in 1889. The stone Spring Lake Community Center was built in 1938 as a WPA project, using local rock and timber, and joined the National Register in 2009. The local read is lake, church, school, and a Depression-era community building that still carries the place's story.
