Springfield, OR

Tucked between the McKenzie and Middle Fork Willamette rivers, Springfield grew up as a hardworking timber town named after a natural spring on an early settler’s homestead. The historic Mill Race, originally dug by hand in the 1850s to power local sawmills, now anchors one of the city’s favorite green spaces. Today, a three-mile paved multi-use path follows the water east from downtown, connecting directly into regional trails that let you bike or walk along the river all the way into neighboring Eugene.

Downtown Springfield centers on a walkable stretch of Main Street filled with local eateries, craft breweries, and small businesses. The restored Wildish Community Theater hosts plays, concerts, and community performances throughout the year in an intimate historic setting. As you stroll through the neighborhood, you will spot colorful street art celebrating local lore, including a tribute to author Ken Kesey and an official mural honoring The Simpsons, whose creator famously based the show's fictional town on Springfield, Oregon.

To the north, the Gateway district serves as a major commercial and healthcare hub, anchored by PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. Getting around the metro area is simple thanks to Lane Transit District's EmX rapid transit bus, which runs frequently between Springfield Station, RiverBend, downtown Eugene, and the University of Oregon campus. The central transit station also links to neighborhood routes running out to Thurston and Lane Community College, making daily commutes straightforward without needing to drive everywhere.

Just south of downtown sits Dorris Ranch, a 268-acre historic park and the oldest continuous commercial hazelnut orchard in the country. Miles of quiet gravel trails wind through peaceful oak savannas, working groves, and riverside woodlands. The ranch serves as the western starting point for the scenic four-mile Middle Fork Path. Linked with the Mill Race Path and a few quiet neighborhood streets, it creates an easy eight-mile loop that gives runners and cyclists a quick escape into nature right in their own backyard.
