About Springfield
Springfield is a Bon Homme County city on an 80-foot chalkstone bluff above the Missouri River country. Territorial Governor John Burbank requested a town, and surveyor Ogden Marsh entered the plat in county records on May 2, 1870. By 1874 Springfield had a post office, sawmill, flouring mill, hotel, and general stores. The name is tied to the freshwater springs in the area. Today the city sits beside upper Lewis and Clark Lake, with a state recreation area on the shoreline and the old Springfield Times still associated with town history.
