Springhill, LA

Springhill sits in northern Webster Parish, about 30 miles north of Minden among Louisiana's piney woods. The community began as Piney Woods, took the name Barefoot for a time, and incorporated as a city in 1902. Its fortunes changed when the Pine Woods Lumber Company arrived in 1896, turning Springhill into a timber town and, for a while, a boomtown. The old mill story is still easy to find in the local landscape: Frank Anthony Park holds the original steam engine, and downtown Main Street keeps the town's older commercial frame.

Springhill's current calendar keeps that timber history in the open. The Lumberjack Festival brings sawing and log-splitting contests each fall, while the Springhill Rodeo, Christmas on Main, Mardi Gras on Main Street, and the monthly Piney Woods Jamboree give the center a steady run of public events. The restored Spring Theatre, built in 1946, is Louisiana's largest single-screen theater. With 4,801 residents in 2020, Springhill has the local character of a small north-Louisiana city whose story still runs through pine trees, a working Main Street, and the memory of the mills.
