Springmont, PA

Springmont is a census-designated place tucked into Spring Township in Berks County, just off U.S. 422 near West Wyomissing. The 2010 census counted 724 residents. It is the kind of place where the township, road, and neighborhood names do as much work as a traditional town center: Springmont has a clear location and local presence, but it is usually encountered as part of the larger Reading-area landscape. That makes the map important here. U.S. 422 puts the community close to the region’s daily movement while the surrounding township supplies the older history.

Spring Township was formed in 1850 from part of Cumru Township and took its name from a freshwater spring that could appear and disappear through limestone fissures. Welsh settlers were among the area’s early residents, living around the Wyomissing and Cacoosing creeks and establishing Baptist churches. Springmont sits inside that older patchwork, even though its modern identity is tied to suburban roads and nearby West Wyomissing. The interesting part is the layering: a named neighborhood, a township with a geological namesake, and a busy Berks County corridor running through landscape that was settled long before today’s traffic.
