Springport, MI

Springport is a Jackson County village whose local history is kept in a room inside the village office. John Oyer arrived from New York in late 1836 and helped organize township government; early maps called the settlement Oyer's Corners. The 2020 census counted 776 residents. The village sits about 12 miles northwest of Jackson, placing the city within the local service orbit while Springport remains organized around its own Main Street, school, and village services. Springport High School is in the village, and the town's roads connect the surrounding farms to Jackson County.

Racing gives Springport a distinctly modern gathering point. Springport Motor Speedway opened in 1989 and hosts short-track racing, including a Bandolero class for younger drivers. The village history room adds a different kind of local meeting place: its shelves and cases hold newspapers dating to 1874, school yearbooks, a former telephone switchboard, team uniforms, maps, business records, and a model of the old train depot. Those pieces link the village's current routines to the transportation, school, and storefront life that came before. Springport is small in population, yet its map has several recognizable centers: the village office and Main Street, the school grounds, and the speedway outside the original settlement.
