St. Ansgar, IA

St. Ansgar is a Mitchell County city on the Cedar River, with a Norwegian-American founding story still visible in its central church and civic map. First Lutheran Church was founded in 1853 by Norwegian Lutheran minister Claus Lauritz Clausen; the limestone church on North Main was completed in 1868 and is a National Register landmark. The congregation helped make the town a starting point for Norwegian settlers moving through northern Iowa and southern Minnesota. St. Ansgar Community School District gives the town its school connection, while Highway 218 and the Cedar River tie it to the wider county.
