St. Clair Shores, MI

Blossom Heath captures St. Clair Shores' shift from lakefront resort to established Detroit suburb. The city occupies 11.68 square miles of land on Lake St. Clair and had 58,874 residents at the 2020 census. Blossom Heath began as the Kramerhof roadhouse in 1911, became the Blossom Heath Inn in 1920, and drew big bands while also acquiring a Prohibition-era reputation for gambling and bootleg liquor. The village bought the property in 1946 and used it as a civic center; today the restored inn stands beside a municipal park and activity pier. The wider area was known as L'anse Creuse to French settlers present by 1710, remained largely agricultural into the early twentieth century, incorporated as a village in 1925, and became a city in 1951. Jefferson Beach amusement park operated from 1927 until its grounds were converted to a marina by 1959, another marker of how Lake St. Clair shaped development.

Lake access still organizes much of the city's recreation and event calendar. The Nautical Mile follows Jefferson Avenue between Nine Mile and Ten Mile roads, concentrating restaurants, shops, boat dealers, and marinas near the water. Blossom Heath, Veterans Memorial, and Lac Sainte Clair parks normally require resident passes, while special events are open without them. The Blossom Heath Activity Pier is separately open to the public, with daily admission available to nonresidents; its walking surface, lowered railings, shade structures, benches, and fishing access were designed for a range of users. In 2026, free Music on the Lake concerts filled ten Wednesday evenings at Veterans Memorial Park, chamber concerts ran on Mondays at Wahby Park, and farmers markets rotated between the downtown district and Blossom Heath. Winter recreation shifts toward the Civic Arena, where two municipal indoor ice rinks support public skating, lessons, and the city's long hockey tradition.
