St. Florian, AL

St. Florian is a Lauderdale County town that began as Wilson Stand, named for John and Matthew Wilson, then took its present name when German immigrants settled the area in the 1870s. The name honors Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters. A post office opened in 1879 and lasted until 1904, and the town incorporated in 1970. With Florence nearby, St. Florian sits in the Shoals orbit, but its own story is German settlement, an old post office, and a name with a built-in firehouse connection.
