St. Jacob, IL

St. Jacob sits in southeastern Madison County on the old US 40 corridor, roughly six miles from Highland and Troy. The village drains toward tributaries of Silver Creek and the Kaskaskia River, so the setting is a mix of road, farm country, and low creek valleys. The 2020 Census counted 1,358 residents, giving the place a compact scale even as St. Louis lies about 25 miles west.

St. Jacob's name comes from Jacob Schutz, who ran a store, saloon, and tavern called the St. Jacob House. That bit of local history helps make sense of the village's recognizable center: a place for goods, drinks, conversation, and travelers moving along the road. US 40 still leads northeast to Highland and west to Troy, giving the village an easy-to-read spine. Today, village-owned utility work, State Bank of St. Jacob, and Home Telephone reflect a place that still handles a lot close to home. Triad schools keep a neighborhood school in the village, while Highland and Troy supply the larger set of doctors, hospital, and professional services.
