St. John, WA

St. John is a Whitman County town on the rolling wheat country of the Palouse, about 40 miles northwest of Pullman. It incorporated in 1904 and grew as a service point for farms spread across the surrounding hills. The town’s name also carries a political footnote: Mike Lowry, Washington’s twentieth governor, was born here. St. John and nearby Endicott now operate as a combined school and social region at the northwestern edge of the county.

The present-day town has a compact downtown, a nine-hole golf course, local health services, churches, a community center, volunteer fire and emergency crews, and roads leading quickly into wheat fields and farmsteads. The St. John-Endicott school system gives the two towns a shared set of classrooms and activities, while Pullman and Spokane provide larger regional connections. Fishing lakes, rivers, hunting ground, and golf add recreation to an economy still tied to grain farming. St. John is a small Palouse town where the school, downtown, golf course, and farm roads all meet in one practical map.
