St. Johnsville, NY

St. Johnsville is a Montgomery County village on the north bank of the Mohawk River and Erie Canal, with NY 5 running through Main Street between Utica and Amsterdam. The area was part of the Mohawk people's homeland before Palatine German settlement reshaped the valley in the early 1700s. In 2019, almost the entire village was listed as the St. Johnsville Historic District, so the streets carry a lot of the region's older building stock into ordinary errands. The river is still visible from the village streets.

Water still organizes the village. St. Johnsville Marina and Campground put boat launches, river access, and overnight stays beside the canal, while the village departments handle streets, wastewater, codes, fire protection, and local meetings. East of town, Fort Klock is a fortified 1750 homestead tied to the Mohawk Valley's Revolutionary-era history. The result is a place with a practical Main Street, a working waterfront, and a long historical layer between the road and the river.
