St. Joseph, MO

St. Joseph's parkway is a linear park that happens to contain roads, not simply a landscaped drive. The continuous 26-mile system curves through the city with woods, trails, ballfields, water features, playgrounds, and smaller parks on both sides of its pavement. The city's 2024 parks report placed the broader system at roughly 1,500 acres and 53 parks and related facilities. At the north end, 162-acre Krug Park has a lagoon, rose garden, amphitheater, playground, picnic areas, and the stone structure known as Krug Castle. Ninety-three-acre Hyde Park extends the system south with ballfields, tennis, disc golf, a splash park, shelters, and open ground. Voters approved a ten-year half-cent parks sales tax in 2021, funding continuing work at both parks, sports complexes, the Missouri Theater, aquatics facilities, and sidewalks.

The parkway is therefore both a historic design and an active public investment. Beyond that green corridor, St. Joseph remains a Missouri River city and the Buchanan County seat. It was the eastern starting point of the Pony Express, which began service to Sacramento in 1860; the National Park Service recognizes the Pony Express National Museum and Patee House among the local places that interpret that history. A July 2025 Census estimate placed the city at 71,001 residents, compared with 72,473 in the 2020 count.

Figures for 2020 through 2024 put the median owner-home value at $154,200, median gross rent at $898, and the mean trip to work at 17 minutes. Missouri Western State University reported 3,132 students at its spring 2026 census. City bus Route 8 serves the campus, while other routes link downtown with the Belt Highway, medical care, shopping, parks, and industrial workplaces. A regular cash fare is 50 cents, buses run Monday through Saturday, and transfers are free. That low-cost network, a regional public university, and a park system running much of the city's length are present-day civic infrastructure, not merely reminders of St. Joseph's frontier prominence.
