St. Mary's, AK

St. Mary’s is a close-knit community of about 600 people in western Alaska, set right where the Andreafsky River meets the mighty Yukon. Originally established alongside the historic Yup’ik village of Andreafsky, the town has deep roots and a rich Indigenous heritage that shapes everyday life. Surrounded by rolling hills and open tundra, it sits upstream from the Yukon Delta, where river life and subsistence traditions like salmon fishing and berry picking are central to the community.

Like much of rural Alaska, St. Mary’s is off the main highway system, so getting around revolves around flights, boats, and snowmachines. The local airport and deep-water barge landing keep supplies and travelers moving, while a 22-mile gravel road connects St. Mary’s to neighboring Pitkas Point and Mountain Village. In the winter, frozen rivers turn into trails for snowmachine travel. For families with school-age kids, the local school district serves as a welcoming hub, weaving Yup’ik language and cultural traditions directly into everyday learning.
