St. Wendel, IN

St. Wendel is a CDP on the Vanderburgh-Posey county line, spread across Armstrong and Robinson townships around the Catholic parish that gave the place its name. The settlement was founded by German-Canadian brothers Marcus and Wendel Wassmer, who came from Baden by way of Toronto; the parish honors Wendelin of Trier, the patron saint of Wendel Wassmer. The Evansville and Peoria Railroad added Wendel Station in 1881, tying the church community to a wider regional route. Older references use Saint Wendel, but either spelling leads to the same parish-and-county-line place. It is a small southwestern Indiana community where parish, family, and county line all overlap.
