About Stamford

Below Mount Utsayantha in Delaware County’s upper West Branch Delaware valley, Stamford is a village split between the Town of Stamford and the Town of Harpersfield. Routes 23 and 10 meet the village, with Lake Utsayantha nearby. Stamford uses “Queen of the Catskills” as a local nickname, a reference to the resort era that once made the village a destination for summer visitors from New York City, Cuba, and South America.

Settlers from Stamford, Connecticut established homes at a place once called Head of the River or Devil’s Half Acre, and Main Street followed an older trail through a mountain pass. By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, hotels and tourist homes filled the village’s summer calendar. Automobile travel ended that resort business after World War II, yet large Queen Anne, Victorian, and other period houses still show where that economy once lived. The village’s current layout still puts a commercial core, historic buildings, health care, senior housing, cemeteries, and recreation spaces within the same valley. Present-day routines run through those older streets and the village’s recreation spaces. Indian Trail Park has a swimming area, tennis, basketball, handball, a Little League field, and a playground; Veteran’s Park provides a gathering space, and Rexmere Pond is used for fishing. Mount Utsayantha adds hiking, camping, picnicking, and hang gliding, while Stamford Golf Club sits in the same local orbit. Stamford is easiest to picture as a valley village strung between two state routes, a mountain park, and a downtown shaped by an earlier resort economy.
