About Stanaford
Stanaford is a Raleigh County census-designated place and coal town named for nearby Stanaford Branch. The branch name gives the map its first clue, but the place also belongs to the history of the New River coal fields: in 1903, Stanaford was the scene of a violent episode at the end of the 1902 New River Coal strike. The 2020 census counted 1,215 residents. Stanaford is a southern West Virginia place whose name comes from a stream and whose history sits close to the Mine Wars.
