About Stanleytown

Stanleytown is a Henry County CDP along the old stage road through the Smith River area, with two nationally listed houses giving the place an unusually clear historic outline. Edgewood, an 1830s manor on Old Stage Road, stood along the Great Wagon Road and Carolina Stage Road used by travelers between Virginia and North Carolina. Stoneleigh, a later Tudor Revival estate built from nearby Smith River stone, adds another layer to the community's architectural story. Stanleytown sits in the Martinsville micropolitan area, but its older map follows the river crossing and stage route more than a municipal center. It is a foothill place with a long road, two landmark houses, and a river at its edge.
