Stannards, NY

Stannards is a hamlet and census-designated place on the boundary of the towns of Willing and Wellsville in Allegany County, New York. The hamlet was first called Stannards Corners and later took its name from early resident John Stannard. Stannard built the first hotel in the settlement, creating a local landmark that stayed in the family story even after Clark Hayes acquired it. Hayes's son, actor George Gabby Hayes, was born in the hotel, giving this small Genesee Valley place an unexpected connection to early American film and television.

The geography is just as specific. The Genesee River flows north through the area, and Chenunda Creek joins it north of the hamlet. New York Route 19 runs north and south through Stannards, while Route 248 follows Chenunda Creek toward the east. The WAG Trail also follows the Genesee River north from the Pennsylvania line to Stannards, linking the hamlet to a longer former rail corridor and the Allegany forest landscape. Stannards is a small New York place with a two-town boundary, a hotel story, a river valley, and roads that bring the surrounding countryside directly through its center.
