Stevenson, AL

Stevenson is a Jackson County city with a railroad story you can still walk into. The 2020 census counted 1,955 residents. Two major railroads run through the downtown area, and the Stevenson Railroad Depot Museum occupies a depot built in 1872, on the site of an earlier depot used by the Nashville and Chattanooga and Memphis and Charleston lines. The tracks are not background decoration here; they are the reason the town grew where it did.

The depot museum keeps more than railroad objects, with displays touching Native American history, pioneer life, and Civil War events. North Jackson High School gives Stevenson a current school center, and the football program won the Alabama 4A state title in 1993. That combination is very Stevenson: rail lines, a big old depot, and a school whose name carries through the county. The city is part of the larger Chattanooga-Cleveland-Dalton region, but downtown still tells the story in local terms, between the tracks and the depot doors.
