Stirling City, CA

Stirling City is a Butte County census-designated place on Paradise Ridge in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Despite its name, it is not an incorporated city. The community sits at about 3,570 feet, roughly 32 miles northeast of Chico, and was founded in 1903 by the Diamond Match Company as a center for processing lumber from the surrounding forests. Company executive Fred Clough named it for the Stirling Boiler Company, whose boiler supplied the inspiration for the new settlement's name.

A Southern Pacific spur once looped through Stirling City to gather timber, and the sawmill remained central until it closed in the early 1970s. Timber is still harvested nearby, while cleared land supports cattle, fruit, and nuts. The Stirling City Historical Society keeps that mill-town story alive in a museum housed in a former 1930s U.S. Forest Service fire station, with logging tools, railroad memorabilia, and family photographs. The 2020 census counted 284 residents, a small foothill community with a long industrial memory.
