Stockton, KS

Stockton is the Rooks County seat in north-central Kansas, a city of 1,480 residents at the 2020 census. It was founded in 1872 and incorporated in 1880 along the natural trail up the South Solomon River; early cattle dealers and stockmen gave the town its name. County government still centers on the courthouse, while the river valley and the old overland routes show why Stockton became the county's service center. The courthouse and museum also hold the records that tie today's city to the county's farm towns and school districts.

The Rooks County Historical Society's Frank Walker Museum on Walnut Street turns that regional role into a public collection of farm tools, one-room school artifacts, medical history, local newspapers, and county records. Admission is free. Stockton USD 271 serves area students, and Rooks County State Lake lies three miles south and west of town for fishing. Stockton connects courthouse business, farming history, schools, and a nearby reservoir in one small county-seat map.
