Stoddard, WI

Stoddard is a Vernon County village in Wisconsin’s Driftless Area, pressed between Mississippi River backwaters and the bluffs, islands, prairies, hills, and woods of the Great River corridor. The village was incorporated in 1903 to serve surrounding farmers. Its early business district had general stores, blacksmith shops, a school, warehouses, a grain elevator, and railroad tracks, giving Stoddard a working center without turning it into a riverboat port.

That distinction still makes Stoddard a little different from its neighbors: it grew beside the Mississippi without becoming a trading post or a riverboat stop. Today the Great River Road brings travelers through the landscape, while boats, birds, and changing water levels set the seasonal rhythm. De Soto Area Schools serve local students, and St. Matthew’s Lutheran School gives the village another schoolhouse connection. The bluffs keep the horizon close while the river keeps it moving. Stoddard’s local scoop is the river-town character it earned by staying a farm-and-rail community on the edge of the water.
