Stoneville, NC

Stoneville is a Rockingham County town on the ridge between the Mayo and Dan rivers, in North Carolina's northwest Piedmont. The 2020 census counted 1,308 residents. Stoneville Elementary School and the Stoneville branch of Rockingham County Public Library serve the town, while the old business center gathers around Henry and Main streets. Deep Springs Plantation and Mulberry Island Plantation keep two historic houses in the local landscape.

The first post office here was called Mayo in 1821. Thomas and Pinkney Stone bought land in the late 1850s and built the store around which the town grew; Stoneville incorporated in 1877. Tobacco warehouses, the Norfolk and Western rail line, cotton, and grist mills made the town a trade point for nearby farms. A category F3 tornado hit on March 20, 1998, destroying much of downtown and the depot. Friendship Park and the town's history mural now sit where that rebuilding story remains visible. The town clock and Friendship Park sit near the rebuilt business center.
