Stottville, NY

Stottville is a Columbia County hamlet and CDP split between southern Stockport and northern Greenport, just south of Stockport Creek and west of Hudson. Claverack and Kinderhook creeks join to form Stockport Creek, which flows toward the Hudson, and that waterpower once made this corner of the county an industrial place. Woolen mills and their associated buildings stayed in use well into the twentieth century. Stottville also had a spa chapter: Columbia White Sulfur Springs drew visitors in the mid-1800s, when people came to drink and bathe in the water.

Today the hamlet sits in a semi-rural landscape of homes, farms, old mill sites, and roads. U.S. 9 runs through Stottville, putting Hudson three miles south and Kinderhook to the north, while Stockport hamlet lies just across the creek. The Hudson River is west, but the local geography is more layered than a simple waterfront town; creeks, mills, springs, and the county seat all share the same short stretch of map. Stottville feels like a Hudson Valley place whose industrial past is still visible in the water lines and road connections.
