About Strathmere

Strathmere occupies the narrow middle of Ludlam Island in Upper Township, with the Atlantic Ocean to the southeast and tidal lagoons and marsh on the other side. It shares the island with Sea Isle City to the north, while Corson's Inlet marks the southern edge of the local story. The name came into use around 1909, after the earlier Corson's Inlet settlement became part of Upper Township. A former railroad and trolley connection helped put the shore community on the regional map.

Today the place is read through beaches, dunes, water, and the limits of a barrier island. Strathmere Beach and Whale Beach are managed through Upper Township, and a community association organizes dune plantings and local events. Upper Township and Ocean City school districts cover the school arrangements. Strathmere's scale is less about a town center than a thin strip between ocean and back-bay water, where beach access, storm protection, and the shape of the island set the terms.
