Strawberry Point, IA

Strawberry Point announces itself before you reach the first storefront: a giant fiberglass strawberry rises above City Hall, a 15-foot calling card for a Clayton County town that has made the fruit part of its name and personality. The city was laid out in the nineteenth century, and the Franklin Hotel, built in 1902, remains the other unmistakable historic marker. Its brick-and-frame streets sit in the rolling country of northeast Iowa, where farm roads lead toward the wooded hills and valleys around Backbone State Park, a few miles south and Iowa's oldest state park.
