Stromsburg, NE

Stromsburg began with Swedish settlers from Ockelbo in the 1860s and was incorporated in 1883. The town square, brick streets, and surviving native-brick buildings—including the former opera house now used as the Viking Center—carry that early community into the present. The Union Pacific reached town in 1897, and a Carnegie library followed in 1918. Polk County's agricultural and rail history is still visible in the square's layout and the city's central institutions.

Swedish heritage returns to the calendar every June. The Stromsburg Swedish Midsommar Festival has been held since 1953 on the third full weekend in June, with a parade, Swedish food, dancing, a smörgåsbord, a chicken barbecue, and events in the downtown square and library. The city was given the “Swede Capital of Nebraska” title in 1966, and the library continues to host heritage programs and genealogy events. Stromsburg's local map is a Polk County city square, a library, a former opera house, and a festival that keeps the Swedish settlement story current.
