Sturgeon, PA

At the 2020 census, Sturgeon was an Allegheny County census-designated place of 1,611 people spread across parts of North Fayette and South Fayette townships. It belonged to the Sturgeon-Noblestown CDP through 2000, then split into separate CDPs for the 2010 census. The name reaches back to Henry Sturgeon, one of the old local names recorded in North Fayette's history. That makes Sturgeon feel like a place built from township lines, roads, and a name that outlasted changes in the census map.

The surrounding townships carry the older layers. South Fayette began as a farming community and grew sharply during the coal-mining and oil-drilling years from 1890 to 1910. North Fayette's transportation story runs through the Montour Railroad, the Pan Handle Railroad, and the Pittsburgh-Steubenville Turnpike; the two rail corridors have since become multi-use trails. Schools still follow the township split, with North Fayette in the West Allegheny district and South Fayette in its own district. Sturgeon sits where old mining routes, newer subdivisions, and two school systems meet, a small community whose map tells more of the story than a central main street would.
