Suffolk, VA

Suffolk is Virginia’s largest city by land area, covering roughly 430 square miles of diverse landscapes and neighborhoods. Because of its size, you can find almost any living environment here. The northern section near Interstate 664 offers modern suburban developments, retail centers, and straightforward commutes across Hampton Roads to Norfolk and Newport News. In the center of town, historic downtown sits along the Nansemond River with classic brick architecture and walkable streets. Farther south and west, the city opens into quiet farmland, open woods, and peaceful rural communities like Holland and Whaleyville.

The local economy blends deep agricultural roots with an expanding business sector. Amedeo Obici founded Planters Peanuts here in the early 1900s, earning Suffolk a lasting reputation as the Peanut Capital of the World. While peanut processing and agriculture remain important, the city has grown into a major hub for warehousing, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and technology. Major employers including Amazon, Target, Sysco, Massimo Zanetti Beverage, and Lockheed Martin provide a steady range of job opportunities across logistics, food production, and defense contracting.

There is plenty to do when you want to explore the local culture and history. Downtown features the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts, a renovated 1920s high school that hosts live performances, gallery exhibits, concerts, and studio classes. Down the street, the historic Seaboard Station Railroad Museum highlights the area's rail heritage with vintage train cars and interactive exhibits. Every autumn, the city hosts the annual Suffolk Peanut Fest, a popular multi-day festival featuring carnival rides, concerts, and family-friendly activities.

Outdoor recreation is another major draw, anchored by the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in the southeastern corner of the city. This massive forested wetland holds deep historical importance as a sanctuary for self-emancipated people and is designated as an Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site. Today, visitors can drive, bike, or walk the wildlife paths, wander along elevated boardwalks, or paddle a kayak across the quiet waters of Lake Drummond.
