Sullivan City, TX

Sullivan City is a Hidalgo County city beside the Rio Grande at the southwestern tip of Texas, a mile east of Starr County and about 23 miles west of McAllen. The 2020 census counted 3,908 residents. Captain Ed Sullivan, a World War veteran who owned a ranch, gave the town its name; the community opened in 1908 and incorporated in 1911. William Jennings Bryan bought land nearby in 1910 and ran a store and filling station, which is a surprisingly big name in a very small Valley backstory. U.S. 83 and Farm Road 886 carry the town through the Lower Rio Grande Valley, while La Joya ISD serves local students.

A 1927 Missouri Pacific loading station helped tie Sullivan City to the railroad, and the Rio Grande keeps the border in the daily geography. McAllen and Reynosa sit close enough to shape work, shopping, and family connections on both sides of the Valley.
