Summit, SC

Summit is a small Lexington County town in the Columbia metropolitan area, sitting in the rural edge between the county’s older farm settlements and the growing Midlands. Its name sounds like a hilltop place, but the local story is more about transportation: Lexington County towns such as Summit, Gilbert, and Pelion grew around railroad stops, and the tracks helped connect farm communities to Columbia and the wider South Carolina network. The 2020 census counted 423 residents.

That setting gives Summit a useful middle ground. Columbia is close enough to shape work and services, while the town remains surrounded by the roads, fields, and older communities of Lexington County. The county’s history reaches back through agrarian settlements, Lutheran churches, and the routes that crossed the Midlands long before modern metropolitan growth.
